HIGHLAND IT SPECIALIST AIMS FOR CENTRAL BELT GROWTH WITH UTILITY COMPUTING SERVICE
27/08/2008
Highland-based IT services and support company Alchemy Plus is setting its sights on attracting new clients from the central belt with the launch of its groundbreaking utility computing service.

The company is spearheading the concept of utility computing – where computing resources and applications are provided from a central delivery centre and customers are charged only for what services they use, just like their electricity, gas or phone bill. Utility computing offers major cost and operational advantages over traditional IT systems and is expected to transform the world of corporate computing over the next few years.

Alchemy Plus now has a number of ‘early adopter’ utility computing clients as well as a full year’s reliable operating record for its groundbreaking system.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Chisholm explained: “Imagine an environment where customers can enjoy much reduced IT costs yet gain access to the most up to date systems and software. Our utility computing service provides built in business continuity protection and allows customers to add or remove users on demand to meet any change in staffing levels. The business benefits of Utility Computing are so compelling it is no surprise that we are seeing a revolution in the way businesses buy and use IT.

“Utility computing represents a lot of benefits and potential cost savings not just for larger organisations but especially for SME’s and new business start ups where an “on demand” model can give them exactly the IT services that are needed at any stage in their development. It is also proving especially popular with businesses that have multiple office locations or a significant number of mobile or home based staff.

“With the installation of our new 45 Mbps internet connection we can now comfortably accommodate the growing number of customers waiting to transfer over to our utility service and meet the high level of growth we expect to see in the months ahead.

Alchemy Plus, established in 2006 now employs a team of 12, with the appointment of three new members of staff this month and further additions planned for later in the year. The company has a current turnover of £600,000 which is expected to more than double over the next 18 months, as demand for its utility computing service grows.

The company is currently progressing plans to build the Highlands’ first stand-alone data centre which will serve the Scottish and UK market. Industry experts and the Scottish Government have acknowledged the need for additional data centre space and confirmed the potential of the Highlands as a suitable location for data centres due to the cool climate and relative security of the area.
