...to be built at Inverness Harbour this year, has short-listed three potential sites in Aberdeen for an additional centre.Dingwall-based IT services firm Alchemy Plus recently submitted a detailed planning application for the construction of its computing centre in Inverness and is now close to announcing the location of a similar facility near Aberdeen city centre, which could be open within 12 months.
Alchemy Plus says that the computing centre will be attractive to private and public sector organisations wishing to cut their IT costs and enjoy improved operational flexibility and disaster recovery protection by outsourcing their requirements to a high-availability data centre.
Data centre provision in the UK is almost at capacity and the requirement for modern top-end technology data centres is a major area of growth. Northern Scotland is tipped as one of the best locations for these centres because of its cool climate, relative security and access to increasing renewable energy sources.
Steve Chisholm, Chief Executive Officer of Alchemy Plus, said: “Budget constraints in the public sector and severe cost reduction pressure in the oil and gas industry makes outsourcing of IT services increasingly attractive and we see significant opportunities within the Aberdeen market that we are keen to service.”
Peter Swanson, Chairman of Alchemy Plus, added: “Data centres are essential foundation blocks for a growing digital economy which is key to Scotland’s economic growth and future prosperity. Through establishing a linked network of high-availability data centres situated across the Highlands and Islands and North East, Alchemy Plus is positioning itself to be a significant player within this growing and highly active sector.”
Alchemy Plus is also close to securing a second site in the Highlands and Islands for a further computing centre, to go online towards the end of 2011, similar in design to its proposed Inverness facility and offering major cost saving and carbon reduction opportunities to clients.
